Hello everyone! I'm excited to announce the start of a new blog series in which guest contributors will be sharing some of their favorite things ahead of the holiday season. I hope that this series will serve as a wonderful gift guide. We'll have lots of varying points of view and plenty of lovely suggestions! Everyone will be sharing a little bit about themselves, their favorite thing, and why they love that item. All the items will be available, either online or in person in the upstate New York or Seattle areas. We'll try to focus on smaller companies and local businesses. We'll have plenty of ideas, here so continue to check back! A new Favorite Things post will be shared every Friday through the holidays.
To begin, I'll start by sharing one of my absolute favorites- the cookbook and collection of stories A Boat, A Whale, & A Walrus by Renee Erickson. Erickson the chef and owner of my absolute favorite restaurant, The Walrus and the Carpenter, here in Seattle. The first time I visited Seattle was Thanksgiving around four years ago. A few days after Thanksgiving, I attended an amazing family gathering in Olympia at which we ate a ridiculous amount of fresh, local crab and oysters. We sleepily drove back into Seattle, talking about how mt husband and I were flying back to California the next day and we wished we had a chance to try a few more restaurants before leaving. My sister-in-law said, "Well, why don't we go to one right now!" Long story short, we went to The Walrus and the Carpenter, where we drank Manhattans, and ate a couple dozen oysters and the best steak tartare I've ever had. I bought this book from the bartender that night. Although it would be a few years until I got the chance to move to Seattle, in the mean time I loved cooking and dreaming my way through Erickson's book. The photography is beautiful, and I love the way she makes simple and casual food seem so elegant. I really recommend this book for anyone who loves fresh, seasonal food or inspired entertaining!
